To Be Filed Under 'Blackmail'

"Daddy's yummy."

I couldn't beleive I'd just heard that come out of my son's mouth so I asked him what he said, and he repeated.

"I don't think you know what that means." I said, trying hard not to laugh.

"Yeah, I do." He was pretty indignant about my insult to his extensive knowledge of the english language.

"Do you eat Daddy?" I asked.

"No! You're silly, Mommy." He laughed.

"Well, only things we eat can be yummy. If you don't eat Daddy, he can't be yummy." And he had to chew on that little tidbit for a while.

Words that indicate how good something is are giving him fits at the moment: Yummy, delicious, favorite, beautiful...to him right now they all seem interchangable with 'good'. Meanwhile, some things coming out of his mouth are pretty funny.

**********

We're continuing to address tantrums by talking to him, and to get him to understand there are ways for him to address his feelings that are more productive.

Last night he suddenly fell out into a fit.

"Hey, bud. What's going on?" I asked. Pretending like there was nothing special going on.

"I'm sad." he sobbed.

"Why are you sad?"

"I want orange juice." he wailed.

"How come you didn't come ask me for orange juice then?"

He stopped (still with the funny breathing that comes with a fit). Stood up. And looked at me totally perplexed.

"I don't not know." He puzzled. "Can I have orange juice?"

As vocal as he is, he's still so much of a baby. He's still learning that he has to use his new tools like language to get what he wants. That a simple request will usually result in a yes and him getting his way (really, I don't typically say no when it comes to him and food. He asks for healthy things at random times, like green beans at 9am, so I say sure). It still doesn't always occur to him he has another way besides crying.

Aren't these things they say and do so funny? It's amazing to me to watch how they start using the language and where they get it and where they don't.
