I grew up on tales of Fairy Princesses. Yet, at the same time I hate what media corporations have done to them (with the possible exception of Disney's Snow White and the live action versions Shelley Duvall was responsible for). They are so sugar coated now, that they aren’t the same stories anymore.
The tales I heard, were the original stories (many of which can be found here). I remember being scared. Being disgusted. But ultimately, wanting to hear the stories over and over again. The only one I had trouble hearing and still do to this day? The Little Match Girl (far too sad).
I love these stories. Despite all the magic and the imagination, they do not do what so much “Princess” stuff does these days. They do not tell you everything will always be okay (so often, they end in tragedy). They do not tell you everything you want, you’ll get (they are filled with disappointment). And they do not preach entitlement. Instead, everything always comes with a price…and sometimes it’s unbelievably high.
Let’s bring back the real stories…

Agreed. The desire for box office draw has overshadowed the need for a good story in many movies, not just Princess movies. I'm sure if there were a remake of Bambi, his mother would live. And his name probably wouldn't be Bambi because it wouldn't be "boyish" enough. Fantasia probably wouldn't be as dark either.
I am with you! I think kids can handle more than we give them credit for.
I also loved the Faerie Tale Theater videos too!
